Tasting Notes

Montepeloso is situated, in Tuscany, in the low hills of the Maremma region, about 10km from the sea. Winemaker Fabio Chiarelotto strives for a pure expression on the region, which is unique and unlike their neighbour's in the Chianti zone, over the hills.

The wine is excellent in combination with steaks, beef carpaccio with sliced parmesan cheese, fresh vegetable salad.

Critic Scores

A little oaky on first nose, the 2013 A Quo is a robust red blend based primarily on Montepulciano, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. The quality of the primary fruit is succulent, plump and rich. So are the background aromas of cinnamon, vanilla bean and toasted almond. This was a good vintage across Tuscany. The finish is exceedingly rich and supple with firmly yielding tannins. Give this wine a year or two to find greater harmony in the bottle.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Montepeloso, located in the Val d'Orcia region of southern Tuscany, sits in a distinctive micro-terroir characterized by volcanic and calcareous soils. The vineyard encompasses south-facing slopes that receive optimal solar exposure, allowing for full fruit maturation across Cabernet Sauvignon and complementary varietals in the A QUO blend. The 2013 vintage was notably warm and dry, typical of southern Tuscany's continental-influenced climate, creating concentrated and ripe conditions for the Cabernet-based blend. The soils, enriched with mineral elements from volcanic activity, impart distinctive structure and depth. Montepeloso practises careful canopy management and selective harvesting to achieve the optimal balance of ripeness and acidity in this Tuscan Super Tuscan-style blend.

Vinification

The 2013 A QUO harvest underwent careful selection and destemming, with fermentation in temperature-controlled conditions using indigenous yeasts. The Cabernet-based blend fermented separately by varietal, allowing the winemaker to optimize extraction for each component. Extended maceration extracted full tannin complexity and colour development. Post-fermentation, each varietal underwent malolactic fermentation to develop secondary flavours. The blend was assembled before oak ageing, which proceeded in French oak for approximately 18–24 months, with the percentage of new oak carefully calibrated to support rather than dominate the wine's character. Extended bottle maturation (2013 vintage is now mature) has allowed secondary flavours and tannin integration to develop.

About this Wine

Cabernet Blend

A red wine blend built around Cabernet Sauvignon, often combined with varieties like Merlot or Cabernet Franc for added complexity.

Montepeloso

Quietly over the past decade, Montepeloso’s Fabio Chiarelotto has emerged as one of the towering winemakers of the Tuscan coast. His windy site sits above the famed Tua Rita estate in Suvereto, producing red wines that are among the region’s most refined.
