    • Description

      96% Shiraz, 2% Marsanne, 1.5% Mataro, 0.5% Viognier

Yarra Yering has been at the forefront of cool-climate viticulture in the Yarra Valley since the late 1960s, with a steadfast focus on crafting wines that balance power and finesse. The Dry Red No 2 Shiraz Blend is a carefully assembled wine that showcases Shiraz alongside complementary varieties to enhance complexity and structure. The estate’s vineyard management prioritizes low yields, hand harvesting, and sustainable practices, ensuring premium quality fruit.

The 2015 vintage experienced a cool and extended growing season, ideal for slow ripening and flavour development. Fermentation was undertaken with wild yeasts in small batches, with gentle extraction to maintain elegance and aromatic purity. The wine was matured in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barrels, which contribute to its nuanced texture and complexity. Aromas of blackberry, dark plum, and violet are interlaced with spice, leather, and subtle oak notes. The palate is richly textured yet balanced, with fine tannins, lively acidity, and a long, layered finish. The Dry Red No 2 2015 is a refined and compelling expression of Yarra Yering’s Shiraz program, reflecting both the site’s cool climate and the estate’s careful craftsmanship.

This esteemed Victorian label roots itself in 1969 when Dr Bailey Carrodus, a botanist, planted his first twelve hectares of vines at the foot of the Warramate Hills. With a degree in winemaking and a doctorate in plant physiology from Oxford, Carrodus had long searched for his ideal site, and he named his vineyard Yarra Yering. The unirrigated vineyards produce low yields, but the wines all have an extraordinary depth and intensity. The fruit of his labour was realised in 1973 when he produced his first vintage, the timeless Dry Red Wine No's 1 & 2.

Dr Carrodus' original site has grown over the years, totalling 70 acres including the original plantings of Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Chardonnay, in addition to new plots of Portuguese and Italian varieties. Though Dr Carrodus passed away in 2008, newly appointed winemaker Sarah Crowe is set to the task of continuing his legacy. An impressive resume, Crowe started in the wine industry at Brokenwood in the Hunter Valley and continued to work vintages at Adelsheim Vineyard and Ponzi Family Vineyards, in Oregon and the Rhone Valley's Paul Jaboulet Aine.
