Miles from Nowhere is one of the two wineries owned by Franklin and Heather Tate. Franklin returned to Margaret River in 2007 after working with his parents establishing Evans and Tate from 1987 until 2005. The Miles from Nowhere name comes from the journey Franklin's ancestors made over 100 years ago from Eastern Europe to Australia. Frank Tate took up the winemaking reins in this new venture together with young ‘up and comer’ Jodie Opie. Their goal has always been to produce wines that express their Margaret River environment in a fruit-driven, textured and complex way. Stylistically, they vary from minimally oaked, nectarine inspired Chardonnays to a three-year-old, cassis and choc-mint Cabernet Sauvignon.
The winery produces a series of wines, including their Best Blocks' range. Miles From Nowhere vineyards display excellent and unique fruit. From old vines to steep slopes, loamy soils to deep gravel, open fields nestled among the gum trees, their vineyards are as diverse as they are isolated from each other – each creating the perfect wine. The plantings include petit verdot, chardonnay, shiraz, sauvignon blanc, semillon, viognier, cabernet sauvignon and merlot, spread over two vineyards planted 20 years ago. Rory Clifton-Parks and Gary Stokes currently head the winemaking team at Miles From Nowhere.
