Tasting Notes

Cigliuti Barbaresco Serraboella 2016 exemplifies the elegance and complexity of Piemonte’s renowned Barbaresco appellation. This exceptional entry-level Barbaresco is crafted predominantly from Nebbiolo grapes grown in the prestigious Ovello vineyards, with additional contributions from the Starderi and Gallina parcels. The diverse calcareous terroir of Serraboella imparts distinctive mineral nuances and structure, making the 2016 vintage a standout expression of the Langhe region’s unique character.

The 2016 vintage is celebrated for its balance, depth, and finesse, characteristics that this wine embodies beautifully. Awarded an impressive 96 points by Decanter, the Cigliuti Barbaresco Serraboella 2016 delivers a captivating aromatic profile featuring vibrant red cherry, violet florals, and subtle spicy undertones. On the palate, it offers harmonious acidity, refined tannins, and lingering minerality, showcasing the wine’s potential for aging and its sophisticated, layered complexity.

Produced by the under-the-radar yet highly respected Cigliuti estate, Silvia and Claudia continue to craft wines that receive critical acclaim for their precision and elegance. As Antonio Galloni notes, Cigliuti is “arguably the most under the radar estate in Barbaresco” given the remarkable quality versus its market visibility. This Barbaresco is sourced from a premium private cellar, assuring provenance and the utmost care in quality preservation.

This refined Italian red pairs exquisitely with rich pasta dishes, roasted meats, and aged cheeses, adding versatility to any sophisticated wine collection. The Cigliuti Barbaresco Serraboella 2016 captures the essence of Piemonte’s terroir and the superb 2016 vintage, offering a luxurious experience that balances tradition with contemporary refinement.

Critic Scores

Smokey and full, modernist barbaresco, chocolate and forest floor with dense chinese tea and dried rose petal. Soft, full and fleshy on the palate, there is good tannic grip here and the wine will age memorably for many years. A very muscular Barbaresco. RS: Smokey and full, modernist barbaresco, chocolate and forest floor with dense chinese tea and dried rose petal, dark coloured chocolate with firm structure and grippy tannins. BW: Pretty strawberry fruit, fresh acidity but intense with great complexity. Well integrated oak even if a little grippy on the finish now. Great potential to age. AH: Massive wine on both the nose, in its impenetrable colour and on the palate. 2016 was an amazing year but surprised still to see this colour, high alcohol and density. Yet, underneath, this still shows some of the classic nebbiolo fragrance. Soft, full and fleshy on the palate, there is good tannic grip here and the wine will age memorably for many years. A very muscular Barbaresco.

The 2016 Barbaresco Serraboella is rich, powerful and explosive, with tremendous depth. A Barbaresco of structure and intensity. Just as it showed from barrel, the 2016 is powerful and imposing, with layers of deeply-pitched, balsamic aromas and flavors woven into its virile, tannic frame. Readers will have to be patient with the 2016, as it is nowhere near ready. Once again, the Cigliuti Barbaresco Serraboella is one of the stand outs of the year.

A gorgeous expression of cherry and raspberry flavors, plus floral hints, sets the pace. Accents of mineral and underbrush add depth as this cruises to a long finish

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Fratelli Cigliuti, based in the Barbaresco zone of Piedmont's Langhe region, cultivates Nebbiolo on the Serraboella terroir, which showcases the mineral-rich alba soils and south-facing exposures characteristic of this prestigious subzone. The vineyard's traditional low-yield approach concentrates flavours and tannin development across Nebbiolo's lengthy growing cycle. The 2016 vintage in Piedmont was moderately warm with excellent ripeness, allowing Serraboella's Nebbiolo to achieve full phenolic maturity whilst maintaining the variety's trademark structure and aging potential. The family's multi-generational tenure in Barbaresco ensures deep understanding of vintage-specific challenges and vineyard management.

Vinification

Serraboella 2016 represents traditional Barbaresco winemaking, fermenting the Nebbiolo fruit in open vats with extended skin contact to develop colour and extract tannins essential for the wine's architecture. The fermentation follows classical Piedmontese protocols, with temperature management allowing slow, controlled extraction over weeks rather than days. After primary fermentation completes, the wine matures in large Slovenian oak casks and botti—wooden vessels that provide stability without oak dominance. This patient approach emphasises the vineyard's expression over winemaker intervention, building a framework for 20+ years of evolution.
