Moulin-a-Vent is arguably the most noteworthy of the ten Beaujolais crus, located in the very north of the Beaujolais region

These wines are known for being some of the most concentrated and tannic made in Beaujolais

Tasting Notes

100% Gamay.

The cru of Moulin-à-Vent is generally considered the source of the potentially longest-lived, most structured Beaujolais. Here Jean-Paul farms 4 hectares of 30-to-45-year-old vines whose roots break through the compact, old granite rock underlying the sandy granite topsoils. As for all Terres Dorées reds, the vinification is traditional Burgundian.

The grapes are rigorously sorted and destemmed, crushed and fermented with indigenous yeasts and no sulfur. Maceration lasts up to 6 weeks, the longest of all of the wines (along with the Grille Midi Fleurie). The Moulin-à-Vent is the only one to be aged in oak (old, small barrels), for up to 10 months. Bottled with a light filtration and a small amount of sulfur.

Classic Moulin a Vent with plenty of red fruits and rhubarb and powerful structure. Intensely floral nose of potpourri, dried lavender and blueberries. Soft, light mineral tannins, earthy spices but plenty of blue fruits and floral flavours, Very approachable and attractive.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Moulin à Vent is a designated Beaujolais cru known for its distinctive terroir, and Jean-Paul Brun's holdings within the appellation occupy southeast-facing slopes with a blend of sandy and granite soil. The vineyard's unique mineral profile—enriched by manganese-rich rock—contributes textural depth uncommon in Beaujolais. Brun maintains organic certification across these parcels, employing cover-cropping and natural pest management to preserve soil biology. The 2023 growing season delivered concentrated Gamay with robust phenolic ripeness amid ideal harvest conditions.

Vinification

Following Brun's house practice, the Moulin à Vent lot underwent whole-bunch fermentation in open vats, with wild yeasts driving a slow, temperature-controlled process lasting two to three weeks. Extended skin contact—longer than some Beaujolais—allowed tannin development appropriate to the cru's structured terroir. Post-fermentation, the wine received minimal handling and was aged in large, neutral vessels to permit fruit character and mineral tension to emerge unadorned.
