Tasting Notes

A quintessential Yarra Valley Chardonnay, crafted in the signature Timo Mayer style—pure, precise, and unembellished.

This wine is fermented and aged for six months in old hogsheads before being transferred to stainless steel, prioritizing freshness and clarity. With no malolactic fermentation or lees stirring, it showcases pristine citrus flavors, a delicate mineral backbone, and a subtle texture from its time in barrel.

The 2024 vintage introduces a touch more richness in the mid-palate, yet the wine retains its sharp, focused character. Vibrant notes of grapefruit, lemon zest, and a salty edge keep it fresh and dynamic.

It’s streamlined, exacting, and made to mature—though resisting the first bottle will certainly be a challenge.

Critic Scores

Here come the hot stepper. Quite the intense and rich flavour profile here, though with good cut and thrust alongside. Magic of Mayer.

Scents and flavours of lemon curd, grapefruit, red apple juice, green mango, a touch of green almond and a big squeeze of lime. Dashes of sea spray and ginger here too. You could say generally there’s lots on here. A suggestion of parmesan cheese funk in the mix too. Slippery texture, some chalkiness to finish. Lots of great concentration and the palate staining length is impressive. A full on style done fully well.

From Hans and Anna Orth's vineyard in Coldstream. Fermented in seasoned hogsheads for six months and three months in stainless. A bright green gold. A touch richer than last year's wine but, interestingly, with more tension, too. Aromas of ripe pear and nectarines together with a gentle nuttiness. The palate is pure fruited and even, finishing saline, nutty and long.

Vineyard Cultivation

Mayer is the small Yarra Valley label of Timo Mayer, made from his own hillside vineyard on the Steels Creek escarpment and from trusted growers in the valley. The Chardonnay for this release comes from Hans and Anna Orth's vineyard at Coldstream, with vines planted in the traditional close-spaced Burgundian layout. Farming is low-intervention, favouring vine balance and early picking to preserve acidity and drive. Mayer's house style is deliberately pure, precise and unembellished. The 2024 Yarra season produced fruit of good concentration; critics found this bottling a touch richer than the prior year yet with more tension, giving a bright green-gold wine of power and cut.

Vinification

The fruit is whole-bunch pressed and the juice fermented in seasoned hogsheads, where it spends around six months before a further period of roughly three months in stainless steel to lock in freshness and clarity. In keeping with Mayer's approach there is minimal intervention, with malolactic fermentation and lees stirring kept to a minimum so the wine retains its citrus drive, chalky texture and saline finish. The result is a full-bodied but tightly wound, focused Chardonnay with pronounced length. Only seasoned oak is used, prioritising fruit and mineral definition over overt oak character.
