Such a great wine -Yarra Sangiovese that absolutely rivals those from Tuscany at the same price.

"Pleasure zone stuff." - 95pts Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Delicious wine of incredible power and ourity - all with a littl extra interest only found in Timo's wines

Tasting Notes

Pure, unpretentious Yarra Valley Sangiovese, crafted in his distinct style.

Harvested from Dixon’s Creek and fermented entirely with whole bunches, the 2024 vintage is vibrant, fresh, and incredibly easy to drink.

In the glass, it presents a bright ruby hue, with lively notes of red cherry, wild herbs, and a hint of spice. The tannins are silky and fine, almost like spaghetti, as Timo puts it—delicate yet firm, providing structure and focus without overwhelming the wine.

A lighter, more aromatic expression of Sangiovese, yet still rich with depth.

Critic Scores

Summon your pizzas, draw your pasta from the skies, exhume your charcuterie.

Silky, satiny, super perfumed. Charisma plus. Vibrant red cherry, touches of maraschino, sweet spice, cola, cranberry, sarsaparilla going on here; kinda explosive, then, in the same breath, this feels tempered with lacy tannins and chalky pucker that extends through the lively squirt of blood orange tang. This has great mojo. It’s not just fun, it pushes an agenda about fine wine in Australia from the variety with its multi-layered vibe. Pleasure zone stuff.

Vineyard Cultivation

Mayer is the small Yarra Valley project of Timo Mayer, known for pure, characterful wines from his own Steels Creek hillside site and from selected valley growers. The Sangiovese for the 2024 is drawn from Dixon's Creek in the northern Yarra, a warmer pocket suited to the variety's late ripening. Farming is low-intervention, with an emphasis on retaining aromatic lift and fine natural tannin rather than extraction. Mayer champions Yarra Sangiovese as a serious, terroir-driven alternative to Tuscan examples at the price. The 2024 gives a vibrant, fresh and highly drinkable expression, bright ruby in the glass with red-cherry perfume and lacy, chalky tannins.

Vinification

The fruit is harvested from Dixon's Creek and fermented entirely with whole bunches, a technique that drives the wine's perfume, spice and silky, fine-boned tannin structure. Wild, minimal-intervention fermentation is followed by maturation in seasoned oak so that fruit and freshness lead rather than oak. The wine shows lifted red cherry, maraschino, cola and blood-orange tang, with the fine 'spaghetti-like' tannins Mayer describes giving structure without weight. It is a lighter, aromatic style of Sangiovese that keeps depth and savoury detail. Precise elevage length is not published and is flagged for verification.
