Tasting Notes

A beautifully refined expression of Tasmanian Chardonnay from one of Australia’s benchmark sparkling wine producers, the House of Arras Blanc de Blancs 2015 combines exceptional fruit selection with the meticulous winemaking and extended maturation that have become hallmarks of Ed Carr’s wines.

Crafted entirely from Chardonnay sourced across Tasmania’s East Coast, Derwent Valley, Coal River Valley and Pipers River, the wine draws together fruit from some of the island’s finest cool-climate sparkling regions. The 2015 vintage delivered wines of excellent structure and poise, with a long, balanced growing season allowing fruit to reach optimal ripeness while retaining natural acidity.

On the nose, fragrant notes of sea spray, grapefruit pith and white flowers are layered with the complexity of fresh pastry. The palate is intensely focused and beautifully poised, showing lemon zest, sourdough and natural yoghurt, with bright acidity providing freshness, precision and length.

Following primary fermentation in stainless steel, a small portion was matured in first-use French oak barriques, with the wine then undergoing malolactic fermentation. Six years on lees builds further texture and complexity before disgorgement with a low dosage of just 2.5g/L, preserving the purity and tension of the Chardonnay.

Elegant, complex and exceptionally persistent, the 2015 Blanc de Blancs is a compelling example of the precision and longevity possible from Tasmanian sparkling wine – and another superb expression of Ed Carr’s distinctive House of Arras style.

Critic Scores

Bright, medium-light yellow colour with a powerful, pungent bouquet of toasted hazelnut, buttered sweet-corn/popcorn chardonnay and malolactic characters, a note of silage/fermented hay, the palate tense and very dry, delicate and lean in its profile. A bit bony but very much a blanc de blancs style.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

House of Arras is Tasmania's benchmark sparkling producer, drawing on the island's coolest, most southerly vineyard sites for age-worthy traditional-method wine. This Blanc de Blancs is 100% Chardonnay, sourced from premium Tasmanian vineyards on clay- and basalt-derived soils where a long, cool ripening season yields fruit of bright acidity and delicate flavour. The 2017 vintage in Tasmania was a cool, even season that favoured slow, complete ripening and the retention of natural acidity, giving a base wine well suited to extended lees ageing. Careful site selection and early picking preserve the precision and length that define the Arras Chardonnay style.

Vinification

Made by the traditional method from 100% Chardonnay, the 2017 was hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed to protect delicacy, then fermented to a dry base wine. Following tirage, the wine underwent its second fermentation in bottle and matured for a number of years on lees, building the fine mousse and layered autolytic complexity - citrus, white flowers, almond and subtle brioche - for which the house is known. After riddling it was disgorged and finished with a restrained dosage in the brut range, keeping the wine linear and dry. Tasmania's natural acidity carries a long, mineral finish. Precise lees time and dosage NEEDS VERIFICATION.
