"80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc 18 months of aging for Montrose (including 60% new oak). What depth, intensity, and purity in Montrose 2024. Marked by subtle notes of elderberry, blackcurrant, and blueberry, the bouquet is positioned with elegance, clarity, and serenity. We will also note a floral touch, respectively a floral vegetal, which supports not only the freshness but also the complexity. Dense and slightly suave on the attack, the wine is carried by fine-grained tannins that confer not only power, but also precious life capital in a notion of aging... and there is enough for several decades. Solid, linear, and exciting, Montrose directs its power with tact, relevance, and sovereignty! A wine that clearly positions itself ahead of the vintage, or rather above it: it soars above it, brilliantly, serenely, with excellence in its sights. "Château Montrose (St-Estèphe; 80% Cabernet Sauvignon; 17% Merlot; 3% Cabernet Franc; a final yield of 38 hl/ha; around 15% vin de presse; IPT 77; organic certification will come this year; tasted at the property with Vincent Decup). Sourced exclusively from Terrace 4, the first part of the property to be planted well before the classification. Tasted just after Terrace III, it is difficult to imagine that this could be better. It is. Even more intense in its florality. Again, wisteria and now with a little iris too. Many wines of the vintage have a bulby character to their florality. Not here. This is all about the petals. It’s very delicate. There’s a hint of violet too but it doesn't overpower the more subtle floral notes that feel very natural and that take the limelight. Graphite and deep dark berry fruits on the palate – black berries, brambles and mulberries. A little red cherry. The fruit profile is rather more familiar than for the Terrace III wine. There’s more gravitas, depth and profundity too. The wine also seems to gather more towards the bottom of the mouth and has more amplitude in its depth. It’s a little more serious but never austere. Chateau Montrose

Chateau Montrose is known today for its powerful, full bodied Bordeaux wine. But that is not what the property was originally known for. In fact, before Bordeaux wine was produced at the estate, it earned fame for being a hunting area.

That all changed when Alexandre de Segur, who also owned numerous, other illustrious Bordeaux properties such as Chateau Mouton, Chateau Lafite and Chateau Latour, gave the property to his son, Nicolas Alexandre. At the time, the estate was known as La Lande de l’Escargeon. Alexandre did not keep the property long. In 1778, he sold it to Etienne Theodore Dumoulin.
