Tasting Notes

Domaine A.F. Gros Pommard 1er Cru ‘Les Arvelets’ 2020 is an elegant and expressive Burgundy Pinot Noir from one of Pommard’s distinguished Premier Cru vineyards. Founded in 1988 by Anne-Françoise Gros, Domaine A.F. Gros is celebrated for producing refined, characterful wines that combine depth and structure with finesse.

Situated on limestone-rich, south-facing slopes in the Côte de Beaune, Les Arvelets delivers a beautifully distinctive expression of Pommard terroir. The 2020 vintage reveals inviting aromas and flavours of dark cherry, blackcurrant and wild berries, layered with earthy nuances and subtle spice.

Silky tannins and polished texture frame an impressive core of ripe fruit, while the wine’s structure and depth promise graceful development in bottle. Powerful yet refined, this classic Pommard Premier Cru offers a harmonious balance of generous fruit, savoury complexity and lingering finesse.

A superb choice alongside roast duck, slow-cooked beef, game dishes, mushroom-based recipes or a selection of fine cheeses.

Critic Scores

This Arvelets shows a smoky, savoury red and black fruit character, with notes of menthol and spice. The wine has tannins that are firm but not astringent and a pleasant freshness that leads to a lingering finish. There are 0.34ha of vines in Arvelets, and this is fermented in stainless steel and old open-top wooden fermenters which have been adapted to the size of the parcel, with one-third whole-cluster. Ferments are slow and the wine is aged in one-third new casks.

About this Wine

Pinot Noir

A thin-skinned red grape known for its light body, red fruit character, and sensitivity to terroir, grown around the world.

Burgundy

Burgundy is undoubtedly the home of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnays in the world, where vineyards, or Domaines have been producing wines for over 2000 years. Burgundy is located in the North-east of France, an hours drive from Lyon and 2 hours from Paris. With over 100 appellations, or sub-regions (more than any other wine region) Burgundy is known for being the most terroir-oriented region in the World. The finest red wines of Burgundy are found in the Côte d'Or, a string of villages including Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey St Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-St Georges.

There are flavours present in great Burgundys that are the envy of Pinot Noir producers worldwide. The elusive peacocks tail finish that goes on and on, and the pretty-elegance backed by Burgundy muscle is the goal of winemakers around the globe. The main levels in the Burgundy classifications, in descending order of quality, are: Grand crus, Premier crus, village appellations, and finally regional appellations. For the Chablis wines, a similar hierarchy of Grand Cru, Premier Cru and Village wines is used, plus Petit Chablis as a level below Village Chablis.
