Tasting Notes

Gaffy & Neal The Peninsula Chardonnay 2024 represents a masterful collaboration between winemakers Doug Neal and Darrin Gaffy, crafted in the renowned Mornington Peninsula. This vintage benefits from the region’s cooler climate, allowing the Chardonnay grapes to mature slowly, preserving vibrant acidity and delivering exceptional freshness.

Produced from the prized P58 clone, identical to that used in Giaconda, sourced from vineyards in Balnarring and Merricks North, this wine showcases a sophisticated aromatic profile. Expect complex notes of citrus blossom, grapefruit pith, white nectarine, smoked peat, and charcuterie, which evolve beautifully in the glass.

The palate is round and creamy, enhanced by 30% new oak and partial malolactic fermentation, imparting subtle spicy oak nuances and a layered texture. Flavors mirror the nose with prominent lemon, grapefruit, stone fruit, and elegant oak, balanced by a bright acidity (TA 8 gm/lt) that ensures a clean, lingering finish. At 13.4% alcohol, the wine maintains a refined structure and excellent drinkability.

Key highlights include:

Exceptional Chardonnay crafted by one of the names behind Giaconda
Intriguing flavor complexity featuring peach, brine, cedar wood, nutty spice, florals, and flint
Reflective palate that captures the vibrant aromas of lemon, grapefruit, and stone fruit with elegant oak integration

The 2024 vintage in Mornington Peninsula is distinguished by its cooler conditions, promoting slow ripening and enhanced freshness, making this Chardonnay a standout expression of the region’s cool-climate potential.

Perfectly suited for those who appreciate a refined, full-bodied Chardonnay with depth, complexity, and a polished finish, the Gaffy & Neal Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay 2024 is a sophisticated choice for any wine collection.

Critic Scores

Medium-light, bright yellow in the glass with a seriously rich and complex bouquet of creamy lees, grapefruit, lemon, smoky struck-flint traces, spices and toasty touches from barrel. A rich, full-bodied, voluminous wine with fabulous generosity of flavour and detail. Dimension and persistence galore. Magical chardonnay.

A sumptuous, profound and artfully balanced chardonnay built around a powerful core of fruit. Bright and punchy, with an intense, faintly waxy bouquet of lemon, grapefruit, yellow peach and creamy yeast-derived notes, it also reveals a hint of butterscotch. Long, polished and translucently pure, its core of yellow peach and lemon butter unfolds mouthfilling layers of complexity, fruit and texture, soaking up its oak and finishing with dryness and tautness. A true vin de garde, but ready to enjoy now if you’re seeking something special.

About this Wine

Chardonnay

A versatile white grape grown worldwide, ranging in style from lean and mineral to rich and oak-aged.

Victoria

The wine region of Victoria has the highest number of grape vines than any other state in Australia. It is home to over 600 wineries and well known regions such as Yarra valley, Heathcote, and Rutherglen. Victoria is situated in the southeastern corner of Australia where due to the location, the climate has a cool maritime influence and is known for their outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, along with producing Australia’s most famed dessert Muscat and Topaque wines.

There are a number of different terroir levels throughout the wine region of Victoria which leads to the production of different ranges of wines. In the southern region of Victoria, the vines are regulated by the cool winds of the Bass Strait. Central Victoria consists of mostly flat terrain that tends to be drier and warmer than the rest of Victoria, which results in more fruit concentrated wines. It may be surprising to note that Victoria is the third most productive wine region in Australia, seeing as it does not have as many areas suitable for viticulture, which has resulted in the cellar door culture of Victoria being concentrated with smaller, but more personal boutique wineries.
