The aromas carry over to the vibrant palate along with raspberry and cherry set against a firm backbone of assertive but refined tannins. The 2013 Barolo Parussi, Massolino's single Barolo from Castiglione Falletto, is exceptionally beautiful and vivid. Crushed flowers, spices, leather, cherry and plum notes all lift from the glass. Perfumed and fresh, with striking palate presence and all the finesse of Castiglione, the Parussi dazzles today. All the elements are in the right place. Simply put, the Parussi has it all. The 2013 could turn out to be the first Parussi that challenges some of Massolino's Serralunga Barolos. It is every bit that promising.

The 2013 Barolo Parussi is built like a little fortress with compact black fruit held tightly together by good extraction, bold structure and textural importance. The wine ages in large Slavonian oak casks for 30 months. Some 4,000 bottles were made. The finish is linear and elegant with a long and polished finish that emits tones of dried fruit, smoke and licorice. Franco and Roberto Massolino completed construction on their new high-tech winery in 2015. It enjoys a fantastic and unique location under the panoramic square in Serralunga d'Alba. This is another fantastic set of new releases from this first-rate Barolo estate.

Vineyard Cultivation

Barolo Parussi is another of Massolino's single-vineyard expressions, drawn from holdings within Barolo's designated crus. The 2013 vintage conditions were moderate and steady — spring and early summer provided adequate moisture, and warmer weather in late summer and autumn allowed full Nebbiolo phenolic development while maintaining good acidity. This balance is characteristic of 2013 across the region: wines are structured and ageworthy, though with slightly softer tannins than years like 2010 or 2014. Harvest in mid-to-late October captured berries at optimal ripeness, delivering the depth necessary for a traditional Barolo-cru expression with extended cellar potential.

Vinification

Parussi underwent natural fermentation in open wooden vats, with fermentation and skin contact lasting 20–25 days to extract full colour and tannin structure. Following fermentation, the wine remained on skins briefly before pressing. Extended maturation in large wooden barrels (botti) — typically 36–38 months for Massolino's Barolo selections — allowed gradual tannin refinement and development of tertiary aromatics. Malolactic fermentation occurred naturally during barrel ageing. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration to preserve complexity and textural integrity, reflecting the house's commitment to minimal intervention.

About this Wine

Piedmont

Piedmont (Piemonte in Italian) is probably the finest wine region in all of Italy, and has laid claim to this since Roman times. It has a continental climate influenced by the surrounding Alps and Ligurian Apennines, and is located in the north-west of Italy, bordering both France and Switzerland.

Piedmont has only 1% of the total vineyards of Bordeaux and 15% that of Burgundy. So while a top Chateaux may produce upwards of 35,000 cases a year, leading Barolo producers will often make only 800 cases. More than half of its vineyards are registered with DOC designations and many are in the Apennine or Alpine foothills, from 300-600m above sea level. Most of the wines are produced by smaller family estates rather than larger holdings.

Piedmont has 46 different DOC and four DOCG regions, and produces the largest number of well known, world-recognized, prize-winning wines. The most famous would have to be Barolo or Barbaresco, whose power comes from the Nebbiolo grape variety. The most widely planted red variety is Barbera although Dolcetto, Muscat, Shiraz and Bonarda are also produced.

The white variety most well known is Moscato, which is often made into frizzante (bubbly) wines known as Asti. Cortese is made into the popular Gavi wines, and smaller amounts of Chardonnay and high quality Sparkling are also produced in the far north of Piedmont.
